Jenkins, a second branch of Mead, Spencer, Taplin (Taplan) and Wilson (Willson)
Florence Pluma Waters Orcutt
I never met my great-grandmother, yet she planted in me a deep desire to know the fathers and mothers, cousins and uncles who loved the family that now watches over my children. She wrote down all that she knew of her children's history. She gave flesh and blood to long forgotten names.
The below book and this web site owe their existence to her.
Our family's harrowing struggle in Colonial New England...
One's family history should never give one undue pride. There are both saints and villains in all our histories. Who our ancestors were is not who we are today. My love of genealogy boils down to two things -- a rich heritage overflowing with colorful and bland characters alike; and most importantly this: to ruminate on them and tell the tale is to honor thy father and mother.
On these pages are many all-too-brief bits of personal stories from the humble heroes and larger-than-life figures woven among the names and dates of our history. Pause occasionally while scanning the thousands of names whose stories have never been recorded. Notice the birth and death dates. Some of these mothers and fathers lost children within weeks of each other.
Do you wonder if the children understood what was going on in the summer of 1776? Did they hear their parents discussing what amounted to treason? Was it frightening or thrilling?
Each of these names is a life, a story all its own. Will most of our stories be lost too? Probably. But perhaps someone four hundred years from now will stop for a moment and dream about your name and wonder who you were.
I am deeply grateful to the many relatives who have published facts, written down stories, and saved letters. All I have done is to gather it all together in one place. What a thrill it is to turn each page and find something new. Thank you to Annabelle Shelver, Milton Shelver, Peter L. Schneider, Robert Baron Mead, Petra Emelia Klug, Florence Pluma Waters Orcutt, Fred Scott Orcutt Sr., Barbara Orcutt Keeton, Edward S. Smith, Judy Orcutt Holy, Sarah Jane Wilson, and Joel Orcutt
This list is only a partial list. I don't know when I'll get to the rest of this list. The list is here only to show the searcher that a name is here; it is not designed for browsing unless you have really good reading glasses. In some cases, places are listed as well. Some of the people listed are not related but influenced our families and are on the site. If you find what you are looking for, proceed to the Genealogy links in upper left column and open the various documents within those pages. Once inside a document, click on "Edit" and select "Find" then type in the name you seek.
